Transforming tough topics into joyful hope

Creative learning design that reduces anxiety and invites curiosity

Life throws some heavy stuff at us. Climate crisis. Mental health struggles. Loss and grief. Financial difficulties. Health challenges.

And the way we usually talk about these topics? It makes everything worse.

Doom-laden statistics. Guilt-inducing lectures. Overly clinical language. Well-meaning content that accidentally leaves people feeling more anxious, more hopeless, more overwhelmed than before.

There's a better way.

I specialise in creating learning experiences, books, games, toolkits, and resources that tackle difficult subjects without adding to the anxiety.

Instead of fear, I invite curiosity.
Instead of guilt, I offer possibility.
Instead of overwhelming facts, I create playful pathways in.

Because when people feel hopeful, they take action. When they feel creative, they engage. When learning feels joyful, it actually sticks.

Handmade ‘Rewilding tree’ made for Be The Future workshops. To help primary-aged children learn about rewilding through building the tree and adding a range of Australian wildlife as part of a larger workshop.

All made from third-hand and reclaimed materials.

How I do it

Storytelling over statistics
Characters you care about, narratives that pull you in, metaphors that make complex ideas feel graspable.

Play over preaching
Games, hands-on making, interactive experiences - learning that feels like discovery, not duty.

Hope over doom
I refuse to traumatise people into caring. My work focuses on what's possible, what's working, what we can do - not just what's broken.

Beauty over blandness
Gorgeous design, quirky characters, unexpected materials - because difficult topics deserve thoughtful, creative presentation.

Research-backed, not made up
Experimentation and upside-down thinking, yes - but grounded in solid learning theory and educational research. I've worked in education from primary to adult (and even in a prison), plus nearly a decade in the eLearning industry.

What I create

  • Books & illustrated resources that make tough topics accessible for children and adults

  • Games & interactive toolkits that turn learning into play

  • eLearning & online courses that engage rather than bore

  • Infographics & visual communications that clarify without overwhelming

  • Handmade learning materials - yes, I unleash the sewing machine and craft addiction for 3D, tactile experiences

Not your typical educational products. These are steeped in storytelling, creative thinking, interaction, and positive mindset development. With puns, humour, and wit if that's your thing.

Some of my learning clients & partnerships

Working with Helen has been one of the easiest things I have done over the last 6 months. Helen brought a wealth of knowledge, style and enthusiasm to her designs, she helped us go from zero eLearning to building a portfolio of engaging and appealing modules... Helen helped us implement standards, create templates and training materials, nothing seemed to daunt her! With patience of saint and such a friendly approach, the whole experience of working with Helen has been one I couldn’t recommend highly enough!

Topics I specialise in

These are the areas where making things playful, hopeful, and anxiety-reducing matters most:

🌍 Environment & Sustainability
Climate change without climate doom. Practical action over paralysing guilt.

💚 Mental Health & Wellbeing
Anxiety, neurodiversity, emotional literacy - approached with gentleness and creativity.

🩺 Health & Social Care
Medical topics, life sciences, research - made accessible without being condescending.

💔 Loss, Grief & Difficult Life Moments
Supporting people through challenges with care, not platitudes.

📈 Personal & Professional Development
Growth and learning presented with kindness, not hustle culture pressure.

Why this matters

Because the stakes are high.

If we scare children about climate change, they shut down. If we guilt adults about their mental health, they avoid help. If we bore people with worthy-but-dull content, they tune out.

But if we make tough topics feel approachable, playful, even joyful?

People lean in. They engage. They remember. They take action.

That's what I'm here to do.

Who I work with

  • Educational and community organisations creating resources on challenging topics

  • Health & wellbeing services needing accessible, non-scary communications

  • Environmental charities wanting hope-led climate education

  • Authors & publishers with books on tough subjects for children or adults

  • Businesses in health, social care, or sustainability sectors

  • First-time authors with important messages to share

If you're working on content about difficult topics and you're worried it might increase anxiety rather than reduce it - that's exactly when you need me.

Examples of my work

Ready to make tough topics tender?

If you have:

  • A difficult topic that needs communicating with care

  • An important message that deserves beautiful, thoughtful design

  • Content that's accidentally making people feel worse, not better

  • A "wonky gem of an idea" that needs developing

Let's talk.

I'll help you create learning experiences that reduce anxiety, invite curiosity, and offer genuine hope.

We are extremely impressed with Helen's ability to interpret our product, customer messages, and environment into effective communication collateral
